Rain helped control the ongoing Black Cove Complex fires located in Polk and Henderson counties, as firefighters continue containment efforts. Wet weather conditions from Monday benefited these efforts, but crews stayed alert to slick conditions while completing suppression repairs to limit erosion from the rain.
According to current reports, the fires have spread over a total of 7,670 acres, affecting areas identified as Black Cove, Deep Woods, and Fish Hook. Containment levels vary, with Black Cove at 93%, Deep Woods at 60%, and Fish Hook fully contained at 100%. The cause is attributed to a power line for Black Cove and Fish Hook, while the cause for Deep Woods remains under investigation. In response to the fires, a substantial crew featuring 45 engines and 371 personnel is engaged in the firefighting operation.
The situation remains under constant review, particularly regarding evacuation levels, which are determined by ongoing fire activity. Residents in affected counties should frequently check Polk County and Henderson County websites for updates.
Efforts to manage airspace issues are also in place, with a Temporary Flight Restriction implemented from the surface to 5,500 feet. The ban is crucial to ensure fire-fighting aircraft can operate safely, as unauthorized drones pose threats to both pilots and ground-based operations.
In light of the ongoing threat, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein issued a State of Emergency on March 26 to enhance the state's response capacity. Furthermore, a statewide ban on open burning came into effect at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 21. The ban covers all open burning activities, with existing permits canceled and no new permits issued until further notice.
