The Black Cove Complex wildfires in Polk and Henderson counties have reached a total size of 7,680 acres. The fires are divided into three sections: Black Cove at 3,502 acres, Deep Woods at 3,979 acres, and Fish Hook covering 199 acres.

Containment efforts are progressing, with Black Cove reported at 97% containment, Deep Woods at 63%, and Fish Hook fully contained at 100%. The source of the fires at Black Cove and Fish Hook have been attributed to powerlines, while the cause of the Deep Woods fire is still under investigation.

The firefighting operation is extensive, involving 34 engines and 393 personnel. With consistent warm and clear weather on Tuesday aiding efforts, the firefighters have been successful in locating and extinguishing leftover smoke points and are working toward full containment. As containment improves, some resources are being returned to their home units.

Evacuation levels continue to be evaluated as the fire activity progresses. Residents of Polk and Henderson counties should consult their respective county websites for the latest evacuation notices.

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been issued, restricting flights from the surface to an altitude of 5,500 feet around the clock until further notice. This is designed to ensure safety while firefighting aircraft are in operation. Drones are specifically warned against as they pose significant risks to pilots, ground personnel, and public safety.

Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency on March 26 to bolster the response capabilities for the wildfires. Residents can stay informed on wildfire activity statewide by using the North Carolina Wildfire Public Viewer and signing up for updates from the N.C. Forest Service.
