Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler is set to provide key details concerning the Crop Loss Disaster Program for farmers impacted by agricultural losses in the previous year. The announcement, which includes the commencement of the application period, will occur on April 1 at 2 p.m. at the Gov. Martin Building in Raleigh.
Agricultural losses in North Carolina last year reached nearly $5 billion, marking the most severe disaster in the state's history. The majority of the losses, approximately $4.23 billion, resulted from Hurricane Helene, while additional damages arose from droughts, Tropical Storm Debby, and other weather-related events. Hurricane Helene alone accounted for over $907 million in crop losses.
The N.C. General Assembly, on March 19, approved financial assistance of over $300 million for desertification ranging from hurricanes to statewide adverse weather. Specifically, $200 million is allocated for the western regions affected by Hurricane Helene and $100 million covers losses from other weather-related incidents across the state.
The Crop Loss Disaster Program, administered by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, will serve as a crucial resource for affected farmers seeking financial recovery. Further specifics of the program will be revealed during Commissioner Troxler's announcement.
