Brittany Cass nearly lost her life when she was hit by a drunk driver nine months ago; now, she is trying to end impaired driving.

“There weren’t a lot of resources for me as a victim – I hate that word – [as] a survivor to dive into here in eastern North Carolina,” Cass said in a WAVY-TV report. “I’ve started my own nonprofit organization. And so [I’m] just trying to bring awareness, as this obviously shattered and shocked and rocked our world.”

Cass underwent life-saving surgery after the Jan. 4 incident, according to WAVY-TV. She suffered from several broken bones and has gone through physical therapy sessions since then. She learned to walk again with therapy and support from her friends and family.

The New Bern woman hopes that she will improve enough to start running again, WAVY-TV reported. She is focused now on raising awareness about drunk driving.

Cass started a nonprofit organization called Bold Like Britt, according to WAVY-TV. She recently hosted a running event at Martin Marietta Park in New Bern. The 5K and one-mile runs were held on Saturday. More than 200 people participated. Funds raised through the event will be used to educate children about drunk driving and help law enforcement officers set up more DUI checkpoints.
