Clemmons Educational State Forest in Clayton is set to conduct a series of prescribed burns from February through early March. These controlled fires aim to reduce fuel loads, enhance forest health, encourage new growth, and support wildlife habitats.

Due to the influence of weather conditions such as wind, temperature, humidity levels, and moisture on burning criteria, providing advance notice for these burns can be challenging. Final decisions are typically made on the day of the burn. The staff at Clemmons ESF will offer as much notice as possible regarding any closures or changes in public use resulting from these activities.

Visitors should anticipate smoke on days when prescribed fires occur. Depending on factors like burn location and wind direction, smoke may linger for several days afterward.

Prescribed fire is considered one of the most effective forest management techniques for maintaining healthy forests in North Carolina.
