The residents of Creedmoor might not know Jennifer Crews or her family personally, they’re still throwing their support behind helping the family get back on their feet after a fire destroyed their home and belongings.
“It's not a matter of knowing them,” Crystal Hart said in a recent WTVD report. “It's a matter of just knowing they live here. They're a part of our community and they need help right now.”
This is a chance for the community to show its members stand behind one another.
The help is coming in various forms. Lauren Hicks, Jennifer Crews' hairdresser, said her salon is collecting donations.
”I went to social media. I saw a lot of comments that said prayers, thoughts, prayers, thoughts, but nobody was doing anything,” she said. “We’ve been getting checks, getting gift cards … clothes and some bedroom stuff back there." The salon is accepting donations of household goods and cash for the Crews family. It is also organizing a basketball tournament that will be used as a fundraiser for the family. That event will fall on Aug. 9 at the Creedmoor Community Center.
Crews said she and her family have lived in the Creedmoor home for four and a half years. Although losing their home and most belongings is a setback, she said the family is happy that all the people and pets survived.
“We've lost a chunk of our lives that we can't get back,” Crews said, but she appreciates the community support she has seen in action. “My son's school, the local churches, my neighbors. This community is like none other. I didn't realize how awesome our community was until now.”
