TOWN OF CARY: Arrest Made in Cary's Wednesday Night Homicide

Arrested

City of Cary issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.

With assistance from the Raleigh Police Department, the Town of Cary Police Department tonight arrested a man related to this week’s murder in Cary. Luis Mario Velasquez-Guevara, 22, of Cary was located in Raleigh and subsequently charged with one count of murder, a Class A felony in North Carolina. He also faces one count of Attempted Murder; and one count of Felonious Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill or Inflicting Serious Injury. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to life imprisonment without parole or punishment by death.

On Wednesday, October 20 at around 6:59 p.m., Cary Police responded to calls of shots fired at the 1200 block of Village Greenway. Upon arrival, officers found Gilbert Noel Guzman, 34, of Cary shot to death. One other person was wounded and subsequently taken to WakeMed Raleigh for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries. Based on the investigation, Cary Police believe all involved knew each other. This was Cary’s second murder of 2021; the first occurred in February at the 100 block of Reed Street.

“We send our deepest sympathies to Mr. Guzman’s family during this unimaginable time of grief. We are hopeful Mr. Velasquez-Guevara’s arrest brings justice for the Guzman family.” Deputy Chief of Police Shawn Anderson.

While an arrest has been made, anyone with additional information related to this case should call Cary Crimestoppers at (919) 460-4636. Callers remain anonymous.
