The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management will conduct a public hearing on April 16, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Currituck Extension Center in Barco. The hearing will gather public comments on the Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) application for the Mid-Currituck Bridge project, submitted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the North Carolina Turnpike Authority.

NCDEQ had previously notified, as mandated by GS 113A-119(b), in February 2025 that NCDOT's CAMA application was received and deemed complete on January 7, 2025. The project involves construction over Currituck Sound from Aydlett to south of Corolla, with enhancements to existing roadways in Currituck and Dare Counties. An initial public hearing regarding this matter was held in Dare County on March 18. Individuals interested in reviewing NCDOT’s CAMA application can do so at the DCM office in Morehead City during regular business hours or online.

The details for the upcoming public hearing are as follows:

Date and Time: Wednesday, April 16, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. (in-person only)

Venue: Currituck Extension Center, located at 120 Community Way, Barco

Registration: Speaker sign-up commences at 4 p.m. on-site via a sign-in sheet.

The public is welcome to provide comments either in writing or in-person at the hearing. The amount of time each speaker receives may vary based on the number of individuals registered to speak, at the discretion of the hearing officer.

The public comment period has been extended to April 30, 2025. Submissions can be mailed to Tancred Miller, Director, Division of Coastal Management, at 400 Commerce Avenue, Morehead City, NC, 28557, or emailed to DCMcomments@deq.nc.gov with "Mid-Currituck CAMA application" in the subject line.

All submitted comments will play a role in the final permit decision process. Those desiring to receive notice of the permit decision should make a written request.
