The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is set to start the renewal process for commercial fishing, seafood dealer, and for-hire licenses and permits on April 15. Fishermen are encouraged to complete renewals in April or May to experience shorter wait times compared to those renewing in late June.

To further minimize wait times, the DMF suggests renewing by mail or using drop-boxes, as well as scheduling appointments for those months. Priority will be given to individuals with appointments over walk-ins. Renewal packets are being mailed to those who renewed by mail last year, containing an application and a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope.

Individuals who do not receive a renewal packet may request one for next year upon renewing their license in person. For questions or to schedule an appointment, individuals should contact their local licensing office by phone or via email at License@deq.nc.gov. Offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Contact information for DMF offices is as follows:

- DMF Headquarters, Morehead City: 252-515-5500 or 800-682-2632

- Manteo Field Office: 252-423-5250 or 800-405-7774

- Pamlico District Office, Washington: 252-948-3800 or 800-338-7804

- Southern District Office, Wilmington: 910-796-7215 or 800-248-4536

The current 2025 licenses and permits will expire on June 30, with 2026 licenses and permits becoming effective on July 1.

The expiration of Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses differs, as they expire based on the purchase date. Recreational fishing and hunting licenses can be purchased or renewed online at https://www.ncwildlife.gov, by contacting the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission at 1-888-248-6834 during office hours, or at various outdoor shops.
