Brunswick County recently issued the following announcement.
Brunswick County Public Health is reporting the first novel coronavirus (COVID-19) associated death in Brunswick County today.
The individual passed away the early morning of Friday, April 3. The patient was considered a person at high risk for severe illness as they were over the age of 65 and had some underlying medical conditions.
Because of this individual’s lack of travel history or known exposure, this individual potentially contracted the virus by community transmission. Public Health is working to conduct contact tracing to determine those who were in close contact with them. There is one household contact to this individual who is self-quarantining at home.
This individual was not one of the previously identified positive cases in the County. They had taken a test before passing away, which was confirmed as positive today following their passing.
To protect the families’ privacy, no further information about this patient will be released.
“The loss of a loved one is very difficult, and we offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to everyone who lost a family member or friend today with the passing of this individual,” Chairman Frank Williams said. “Our thoughts are with them and everyone who continues to fight and respond to this crisis in our county, state and nation.”

“We recognize that this is tough news for all of us to hear, especially those who have a higher risk for illness, who also have dear ones struggling with this virus or are actively responding to the pandemic,” Health and Human Services Director David Stanley said. “We continue to urge everyone to stay calm and to follow the stay at home order and other mandates our state, our county, and our municipalities have issued to protect one another from this disease.”
