Governor Josh Stein announced that Provalus, an information technology outsourcing firm, will establish a Center of Excellence in Edenton, North Carolina. This initiative is expected to create 61 jobs and involves an investment of $6.48 million in Chowan County.
“Companies like Provalus that need skilled workers recognize North Carolina offers talent in great small-town locations like Edenton,” said Governor Josh Stein. He highlighted the state's workforce, education system, business climate, and infrastructure as key factors for companies choosing to invest in North Carolina.
Provalus, operating under Optomi, LLC since its founding in 2017, focuses on creating technology opportunities in underserved areas. The company aims to develop talent within rural and veteran-heavy communities across the United States. The new project will transform a former Sears retail store into a Center of Excellence to meet client demands in cybersecurity, application development, and network operations.
“This new Center of Excellence represents more than just business growth; it’s a testament to our commitment to empowering communities and unlocking potential,” stated Mike Keogh, President of Provalus. He expressed pride in bringing their mission to Edenton and anticipated creating lasting opportunities for local residents and businesses.
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley praised the initiative's focus on veterans: “As a military-friendly state with a deep pool of talented veterans, it’s great to see a company proactively tap into that strength.” He affirmed North Carolina's ongoing investment in workforce development programs.
The average salary for the new positions is projected at $46,393, slightly above Chowan County's current average wage of $46,384. A performance-based grant of $150,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will support the project. This fund aids local governments in attracting economic investments and job creation but requires companies to meet specific targets before receiving funds.
N.C. Representative Edward Goodwin welcomed the announcement: “With today’s news, our community will see more economic vitality in Edenton, Chowan County, and across the entire region.” Similarly, N.C. Senator Norman Sanderson remarked on North Carolina's strong business environment: “Once again, North Carolina proves why it’s one of the top states for business in the nation.”
The project was supported by various partners including the North Carolina Department of Commerce and Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina among others.
