Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx has initiated an investigation into antisemitism at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by sending a letter to MIT President Sally Kornbluth and MIT Corporation Chair Mark P. Gorenberg. In the letter, Foxx expresses concerns about MIT's response to antisemitic incidents on campus and its failure to protect Jewish students and faculty.
Foxx's letter states, “We have grave concerns regarding the inadequacy of MIT’s response to antisemitism on its campus. In testimony before the Committee on December 5, 2023, Dr. Kornbluth made numerous statements that further called into question the Institute’s willingness to address antisemitism seriously." She also highlights the discrepancy between MIT Corporation's endorsement of Kornbluth's testimony and the experiences of Jewish students on campus.
The letter details several antisemitic incidents at MIT, including disruptions by the anti-Israel student group Coalition Against Apartheid, the invitation of Dalia Mogahed who endorsed Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel, and antisemitic remarks made by MIT faculty and staff. Foxx raises concerns about MIT's supposed commitment to free speech being used as an excuse for inaction against antisemitism on campus.
Foxx concludes the letter by requesting various documents and information from MIT related to antisemitic acts or incidents, disciplinary processes, changes in academic status, personnel actions, and communications involving antisemitism and Israel since January 1, 2021.
The investigation initiated by Chairwoman Foxx sheds light on the pressing issue of antisemitism at MIT and calls for accountability and transparency in addressing these concerns on the campus.
