City of Albemarle issued the following announcement on Jan. 3.

The City of Albemarle will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, January 3, at 6 p.m. inside City Hall on a proposed stormwater utility program.

The City has been working to develop a stormwater utility program to address residents' concerns about flooding. A stormwater program is designed to reduce the severity, frequency, and duration of flooding.

The proposed stormwater program would be funded by a monthly fee. Originally the proposed monthly fee for residential customers was $11.50 per month. The proposed fee has now been reduced to $5.80 per month following feedback from residents, commercial, and non-commercial property owners.

Non-residential properties (i.e. commercial, industrial, government, school, medical, places of worship, etc.) would be billed based on dividing the total impervious surface of the property by the Equivalent Residential Unit (determined to be 3,270 sf) and multiplying that amount by $5.80.

In order to achieve the reduced monthly rate of $5.80, proposed service levels were reduced. This means it will take more time to ramp up to proactively repair infrastructure & map the stormwater system.
