ASHEVILLE-BUNCOMBE TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE: A-B Tech Receives Funding for Workforce Skills Training, Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Scholarship Fund

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College issued the following announcement.

A-B Tech has received more than $288,000 from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Scholarship Fund to cover workforce training for students enrolled in 10 targeted program areas.

The GEER Scholarship Program was established by the North Carolina Governor’s Office to support the 58 N.C. Community Colleges’ workforce development programs and members of local communities affected by the impact of the COVID-19 viral pandemic. It is intended to reduce or eliminate barriers to underserved populations in pursuing and accessing education or training through 10 workforce pathways that lead to a state or industry-recognized credential.

Students enrolled in the following 10 programs of study may be eligible for GEER scholarships:

· Automotive

· Aircraft Maintenance

· Construction

· Criminal Justice

· Emergency Medical Services

· Healthcare

· Industrial/Manufacturing

· Information Technology

· Transportation

· Fire and Rescue Services

A-B Tech programs that are currently eligible include: Barber Academy; Certified Production Technician; Clinical Massage; CNC Machining 101; Composite Technology; Electronic Health Records; EMT; Basic EMT; Advanced Fire Academy; Industrial Maintenance; Machining Fundamentals; Nurse Aide 1; Nurse Aide II; and Ophthalmic Assistant.

Scholarship awards will be determined by each college based on student need, local industry needs, the number of eligible students, and the cost of relevant courses. The scholarship will provide up to a maximum award of either $750 per course or the cost of the course fee(s) if the fee(s) exceed $750. It will help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, credentialing tests, transportation, childcare and other components of the total cost of attendance from August 24, 2020 through September 30, 2022.

Eligibility requirements for students applying for the scholarship include:

  1. Resident of North Carolina.
  2. Enrolling into or enrolled in a Workforce Continuing Education (WCE) pathways/courses of 96 hours or more and leading to a State or industry-recognized credential/certification. These pathways may consist of a single WCE course or a series of courses.
  3. Enrolling into or enrolled in one of the 10 programs of study.
