Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women
It is February and we want to celebrate women of color during Black History Month. Jo Ann Mathews, local author, has just released her first e-book, Women and Adversity, featuring twenty-three African American women. The list includes well-known figures such as Harriet Tubman, and Coretta Scott King, entertainers like Jennifer Hudson and Ella Fitzgerald, and Carolina personalities Shea-Ra NIchi, a dancer, and singer Tanarsha Hunter.
JoAnn Matthews is not new to writing. She had a long career as a newspaper writer before coming to the Carolinas and once here, she re-established a writing career. She wrote for the Sun News for eighteen years and writes for South and North Brunswick Magazines. “I started the blog in 2014 to ‘brand’ my writing and to make people more aware of the struggles women endure on their path to success—in many fields.”
This book is developed from Matthew’s blog, Women and Adversity. She says, “My goal was, and, still is, to make others aware of women who triumphed over what seemed like insurmountable odds.” While the first book groups together interview from the blog with women of color, Matthews has plans to issue more eBooks in the future, grouping other interviews. For more information, visit Jo Ann’s website http://www.jamathews.com/.
*This e-book will be available on amazon.com on Friday, February 7, 2020.
