The Division of Coastal Management, part of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, will conduct a public hearing on April 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Currituck Extension Center in Barco. This hearing will address public comments on the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the North Carolina Turnpike Authority's Coastal Area Management Act application concerning the proposed Mid-Currituck Bridge project.

NCDEQ announced in February 2025 that the application for a CAMA permit (TIP No. R-2576) was deemed complete on January 7, 2025. This permit pertains to the Mid-Currituck Bridge Project, which spans Currituck Sound from Aydlett to south of Corolla, and includes related roadway improvements in Currituck and Dare Counties. A previous hearing was held in Dare County on March 18, and the application details can be viewed at the DCM office in Morehead City or online.

The public hearing is set for April 16, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Currituck Extension Center, 120 Community Way, Barco. Registration for speakers begins at 4 p.m. on-site. "Speaker time may be limited at the discretion of the hearing officer depending on the number of registered speakers."

The deadline for submitting public comments has been extended to April 30, 2025. Comments can be mailed to Tancred Miller, Director, Division of Coastal Management, or emailed to DCMcomments@deq.nc.gov, with "Mid-Currituck CAMA application" indicated in the subject line.

NCDEQ assures that "All comments will be considered in making the final permit decision." Interested individuals can request a notice of the permit decision in writing.
