The Black Cove Complex fires in Polk and Henderson counties have become the top priority for firefighting efforts in the Southern U.S., as reported by the National Interagency Fire Center. Currently, 303 personnel from North Carolina and other states are engaged in combating this incident.
A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for these counties, indicating potential severe fire behavior due to expected high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity. Firefighters are actively preparing firebreaks and protecting structures.
On March 25, a community meeting was held for Henderson County residents to discuss updates on the Black Cove, Deep Woods, and Fish Hook fires. Over 400 people attended to hear about current fire conditions and management strategies. A recording of this meeting is available online for those who could not attend.
The Black Cove Fire is currently burning over 3,046 acres with no containment. Located near Saluda in the Green River Gorge, it continues to spread rapidly due to high winds and dry weather. The cause of this fire was identified as a downed powerline. One firefighter was injured but is now stable after receiving medical care.
The Deep Woods Fire covers 2,923 acres with no containment either. It burns northwest of Columbus in timberland within the Green River Gorge area. Efforts are focused on preventing its spread southward past Holbert Cove Road. The cause remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, the Fish Hook Fire has burned 199 acres but is 72% contained near Lake Adger. Forward progress has been halted as firefighters secure edges and extinguish smoldering areas.
Evacuation levels are being assessed continuously based on ongoing fire activity. Temporary Flight Restrictions are enforced up to an altitude of 5,500 feet due to firefighting aircraft operations.
A statewide ban on open burning remains effective since March 21 until further notice; all burning permits have been canceled accordingly.
