The General Assembly reconvened on Wednesday, initiating its 2025 session with the filing of numerous bills. Among the early proposals are measures to exempt bonus pay up to $2,500, as well as overtime and tips, from state income taxes. Another proposal seeks to eliminate Daylight Saving Time in the state.
Despite retaining control of the legislature, Republicans no longer hold a veto-proof supermajority following the November elections. This change means that if Democratic Governor Josh Stein vetoes a bill, bipartisan support will be necessary to override it.
In addition to legislative proposals, the House concentrated on relief efforts for western North Carolina in response to Hurricane Helene. The House Select Committee on Helene Recovery convened to assess recovery progress and future challenges. The state had requested over $25.7 billion in federal aid but has received only $15.7 billion so far.
As major priorities and urgent recovery issues loom, this session is set to be pivotal. NFIB will monitor proceedings closely, advocating for policies that foster a supportive environment for Main Street businesses.
