Common Cause, a nonpartisan watchdog organization, has released its 2024 "Democracy Scorecard," which evaluates members of Congress on their support for voting rights, Supreme Court ethics, and related reforms. The scorecard aims to inform voters about their representatives' positions on key democracy-related issues.
Virginia Kase Solomón, President & CEO of Common Cause, stated: "Our 2024 Democracy Scorecard shows a surge of support in Congress for reforms that strengthen the right to vote, take back the Supreme Court, and break big money’s grip on our politics." She noted that the number of members with perfect scores has increased significantly from 58 in 2020 to 117 in 2024.
The scorecard tracks legislative support since 2016 and includes ten items in the U.S. Senate and thirteen in the House. These include the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
Aaron Scherb, Senior Director of Legislative Affairs at Common Cause, said: "The 2024 Democracy Scorecard empowers voters with information to hold their leaders in Washington accountable for a government that works for all Americans, not just some." He highlighted that five North Carolina members received near-perfect scores while four received zeroes.
Representatives Valerie Foushee, Jeff Jackson, Kathy Manning, Wiley Nickel, and Deborah Ross each scored 12 out of 13. In contrast, Senators Ted Budd and Thom Tillis scored zero out of ten; Representatives Dan Bishop and Patrick McHenry also scored zero out of thirteen.
Common Cause emphasizes its nonpartisan stance and does not endorse or oppose political candidates.
