Amazon received $31 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from North Carolina communities to build five facilities.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found North Carolina provided the 23rd-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
North Carolina is ranked behind Connecticut (3 projects/$38 million) and ahead of Pennsylvania (4 projects/$30 million), Georgia (5 projects/$27 million), and Mississippi (3 projects/$24 million).
Arlington, Virginia was awarded the largest portion of the 310 taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
The most expensive subsidy provided in North Carolina was by the Charlotte government, which offered $13 million to Amazon for a city subsidies; project located near the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
The second largest subsidy was worth $6 million for a $2.5 million city grant; $1.1 million state match; $2.7 million in federal American Rescue Plan grant that North Carolina is using for sewer system work at the Amazon site; and unspecified amount in a 7-year real property tax abatement. in Smithfield.
There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion.
