A couple of North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) workers are being credited with providing CPR in a medical emergency until an ambulance arrived.

John Coleman and Jeremy Shoffner, both transportation supervisors with the NCDOT’s Division 9 Roadside Environmental section, were driving through Kernersville when they saw something that just didn’t seem right to Coleman.

“As we drove by and I saw the situation, I felt that something wasn’t right,” Coleman told CBS17.com. “I looked at Jeremy and said, we need to turn around and find out what is going on.”

They pulled their vehicle over and found a person on a porch who was in medical distress. The two men, trained in CPR and first aid, called for an ambulance and provided cardiac care while they were waiting for the medics to arrive.

Coleman, who has served as a firefighter, said coming across a situation like that unexpectedly was a little bit different than when he was expecting to to provide care at a fire.

While he admits to being a little nervous, both men said it was providence that they were there at the time.

“I am thankful that God put me there at the right time and place to help, and that God knew that we could do it,” Shoffner told CBS17.com. “It makes my heart feel full to have the positive outcome and know that I helped save this man’s life and that he is now alive and doing well.”

The Kernersville mayor and others honored the men for their role in the medical emergency. The pair accepted the recognition, but also thanked the first responders for arriving quickly to administer additional help.
