Richard Hudson is a state representative from NC-8 in the House of Representatives. The House is one of Congress’s two chambers and part of the federal government’s legislative branch.
Hudson stated that he could not imagine putting himself in the place of parents who have lost children in the recent school shootings.
“I’m a father of an elementary school child and so every time we have a shooting it’s just devastating for me, and I can only imagine what the parents are going through," Representative Hudson told the Old North News on June 7.
Representative Richard Hudson (NC-8) proposed the “Secure Every School and Protect Our Nation’s Children Act” Tuesday (6/7.) It strives to add further school resource officers and mental health counselors in schools. $7 billion would go to help schools with this plan.
When the bill is broken down, $1 billion would go to schools that want to hire school resources officers. $1 billion in additional funding would go to schools that want to hire guidance counselors. The final $5 billion would go to programs to train law enforcement on active shooting training.
“It’s very important," Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker said. "We need all the funding we can get so we can get more. Officers to be able to cover our school system to make sure that it’s sticking and that we’re there if anything happens."
