City of Whiteville issued the following announcement.
Forecasters predict that Isaias will strengthen into a Category I hurricane before it comes ashore later this evening. Tropical force winds will begin to arrive at dusk, with the worst of the storm lasting until after midnight.
The track has moved north, making landfall around the state line, then straight through Tabor City and Whiteville.
Peak sustained winds in Whiteville are forecast at 53 miles per hour with peak gusts at 67 miles per hour.
“Keep in mind that some uncertainty exists with the storm’s intensity and track, which would greatly influence sustained winds and gusts across the area,” NWS warned.
Isaias could lead to flooding in areas that are low-lying or have poor drainage. Columbus County is forecast to receive 4-6 inches of rain, although that is subject to change depending on the track of the storm. “The greatest potential for flooding would be Monday night, not early Tuesday morning,” according to a NWS briefing.
