CITY OF WHITEVILLE: Two more Columbus County residents die from COVID-19

City of Whiteville issued the following announcement.

Two Lake Waccamaw area residents died from COVID-19 in recent days, according to state data.

On Thursday, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) COVID-19 dashboard noted a total of three deaths in the Lake Waccamaw zip code. By Sunday afternoon that number had increased to five. It is not clear specifically when the two people died.

The two deaths brought the county’s total number of COVID-19 deaths to 46. Columbus County has a total of 826 COVID-19 cases, according to DHHS, which does not list the number of recoveries. According to the Columbus County Health Department’s last update, on Thursday, approximately 633 people had recovered from the coronavirus.

Earlier in the pandemic, Columbus County led the region in the number of COVID-19 cases based on population. However, several area counties have surpassed Columbus County’s rate of 148 cases per 10,000 population. Robeson County has 200 cases per 10,000 population and Bladen County has 584 cases per 10,000 population, according to DHHS. Columbus still exceeds Brunswick (87 cases per 10,000 population), New Hanover (101 cases per 10,000 population), and Pender (100 cases per 10,000 population).
