A state senator posted an email to his Medium page on May 26 that raises questions about the Department of Commerce's focus when it comes to processing the high volume of unemployment claims.

A screenshot of the email posted to Senate Leader Phil Berger's (R-Caswell) official Medium press page references an upcoming training session at the Department of Commerce for employees called "How to Use Only One Paper Towel." The email is reportedly written by Coley Stilley, the talent development specialist for the department."

The email links the paper towel training to previous TEDTalk sessions the department hosted for workers. The email was sent to employees on May 8.

In the email, Stilley reportedly writes, "This email serves as an announcement for next week's topic, How to Use Only One Paper Towel, by Joe Smith. You will be able to search and register for the trainings in the LMS. You must register through the LMS in order to attend and get credit for the session. I have created three sessions for this event, so pick the one this is most convenient for you."

The training, Berger's site notes, comes as the department still has not processed "hundreds of thousands of unemployment claims" leaving eligible residents waiting months for a check.

"Perhaps Gov. [Roy] Cooper could direct some of the employees who participated in the paper towel training to spend their time getting unemployment assistance checks out the door," Berger's press page said.
