CITY OF WHITEVILLE: Columbus County reports two more COVID-19 deaths; nine more cases

City of Whiteville issued the following announcement on May 18.

After announcing only three new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, the Columbus County Health Department reported two more deaths and nine new cases on Monday.

One of deaths happened Saturday in a hospital; the other happened Sunday at home. Both people had previously been identified as positive for the coronavirus, according to the health department, which didn’t release any additional information about the deaths. Twenty people have now died as a result of COVID-19 in Columbus County.

The nine new cases announced Monday brought the county’s total number of cases to 250.

“Two of the new cases are connected with a congregate living facility in Columbus County, two cases of the new cases are family members of a known positive case living in the same household, one case is a healthcare worker, two cases are still under investigation, and the source of infection is unknown for two cases,” the health department said in a press release.

According to a report released Friday by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, 93 COVID-19 cases and 11 deaths in Columbus County were linked to nursing home and assisted living facilities:

The nine new cases announced Monday brought the county’s total number of cases to 250.
