North Carolina has entered the first phase of reopening, but it will take some time before it enters the second stage.
Gov. Roy Cooper announced it may not be until May 22 before the state takes another step in reopening its economy. As the governor attempts to navigate the state’s path through the pandemic, his strategy has at least one Republican leader questioning results and wishing for more transparency.
Sen. Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) posted on his Medium page on May 12 a statement questioning the direction the state is headed.
“Governor Cooper should explain what his administration’s overarching strategy is. Is his strategic endgame to prevent much of the population from ever becoming infected? Does he believe that is possible?”
Berger went on to question whether the governor was simply deciding to manage the virus through herd immunity.
“Or is his strategic endgame to manage the virus as it naturally spreads through the population — to protect the highest-risk groups while seeking herd immunity through the young and healthy first?
He said the public needs a view into the administration’s thinking, what the goals are and what he believes is achievable.
