Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
Smart Series - Employee Relations: Handling Touchy Subjects and Policies You Need to Have in Place
Wednesday, December 04, 2019 8:00 AM - 9:00 AMEST Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce - Boardroom 36 Montford Avenue Asheville, NC 28802 The Chamber's Smart Series offers information and practical tools to help you improve your performance, your business success, and your impact in the community -- one of the many benefits offered to Chamber members. In December, we will hear from Jon Yarbrough with Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, a national labor and employment law firm representing employers only in all aspects of labor and employment law. Do you have employees? Or, do you just have independent contractors? Did you steal your personnel policies from the Internet? Do you think I-9 is a highway in California? Do you tell employees they are laid off so you don’t have to tell them they have been fired? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then this seminar is for you. Nearly 40% of all litigation involves employment disputes. Don’t be part of that trend. In this Smart Series session, you will receive practical tips and guidance on staying legal and compliant when dealing with employee issues. Jon will discuss crucial employment policies to have in place at every employer, the distinctions between employees and contractors and the growing legal concern over misclassification of employees, and compliance with state and federal wage and hour laws, among other issues. About Jon Yarbrough Jonathan W. Yarbrough is a partner in the law firm of Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP. The firm is dedicated to representing management exclusively in all aspects of the employment relationship. Mr. Yarbrough's practice includes providing advice and counsel to employers on compliance with the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and wage and hour laws, in addition to other federal and state employment laws. He has successfully represented clients before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, and the United States and North Carolina departments of labor, among other federal and state agencies. Mr. Yarbrough is a frequent speaker on employment law topics and was a significant contributor to North Carolina Employment Law, a treatise on state employment law published by Lexis Law Publishing.
