CHARLOTTE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Fintech startup Better.com chooses Charlotte for new office

Office 2(1000)

Charlotte Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement  on Sept. 16

Digital mortgage lender Better.com is the latest tech company to look to Charlotte for talent.

The fintech company announced Monday it has opened an office at WeWork’s coworking space at The RailYard in South End. Better.com expects to hire 100 employees by the end of 2019, and 1,000 employees within the next five years.

Earlier this year, Ally Financial announced a partnership with Better.com which served as the impetus for Better.com to open offices in Charlotte. This partnership combined the capabilities of Ally Home, the company’s direct to consumer mortgage business, with the digital platform of Better.com to help create an end-to-end digital origination and funding process. The new Charlotte office will serve as the home base for Ally Home and Better.com’s loan officers.

“Opening a new office in Charlotte will help us tap into the city’s incredibly talented workforce,” said Vishal Garg, CEO and founder of Better.com. “As a rapidly growing startup, we see an entrepreneurial hunger and spirit in the city of Charlotte that is akin to what we used to see in places like downtown Manhattan in the 1980s and Silicon Valley in the 1990s. We’re thrilled to have chosen Charlotte as we enter the next stage of our company’s growth.”

Better.com joins Lowe’s, Honeywell, BB&T and SunTrust, and many other companies expanding in Charlotte as the city experiences rapid growth and offers a business-friendly environment. The second-largest financial services center in the world, with a burgeoning talent pool and high quality of life, Charlotte has become a top destination for fintech companies looking to launch or expand in this exciting sector.

“Charlotte is a city built on innovation and commerce, with a strong educational foundation that provides optimal opportunities for fintech startups like Better.com,” said Mayor Vi Lyles. “We welcome Better.com and thank them for helping us to grow into the technology-based city we want to be.”

This project was a collaborative effort between the City of Charlotte, Ally Financial and Carolina FinTech Hub.
