Wilkes County officials announced on Apr. 30 that the county’s Geographic Information System (GIS) website will be unavailable from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on May 1, due to a scheduled system upgrade.

The planned maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to improve the GIS transition process for Wilkes County. The county said it regrets any inconvenience caused by the temporary unavailability and thanked residents for their understanding.

In related educational data, recent figures show that among senior students in Wilkes County school districts who took the science portion of the ACT during the 2022-23 school year, only 19 percent were considered ready for college, while juniors had a slightly higher rate at 22.4 percent according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. For reading proficiency, results indicated that 27.6 percent of seniors and 30.5 percent of juniors met college readiness standards according to state education data.

Math scores showed similar trends with just under one-fifth (19.7 percent) of seniors and about one-fifth (21.5 percent) of juniors reaching college-ready benchmarks as reported by state sources.

These statistics provide context on academic preparedness in Wilkes County schools as local government continues its technological upgrades. Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly around the brief GIS outage as improvements are implemented.
