Fire crews are actively managing the Black Cove Complex fires in Polk and Henderson counties in North Carolina, collaborating with personnel from within the state and others from 14 additional states. A total of 458 personnel are currently engaged in the effort.
The situation has been somewhat alleviated by higher humidity and calmer winds, which reduced fire activity overnight. Many areas remained quiet, with minimal smoke.
The Black Cove Fire, situated about two miles northeast of Saluda in the Green River Gorge, now covers 3,410 acres and is 23% contained. Initially reported on March 19, its cause is attributed to a downed powerline. Suppression repair is underway, particularly in the northeast sector.
In the nearby area northwest of Columbus, the Deep Woods Fire spans 3,797 acres and is 32% contained. A controlled firing operation was successfully completed around Holbert Cove Road, assisting in containment efforts. The fire was also first reported on March 19, but its cause is still under investigation.
The Fish Hook Fire is smaller, at 199 acres, and 95% contained near Lake Adger northwest of Mill Spring. Its cause was also a downed powerline, reported on March 20. Efforts continue to secure firebreaks and monitor smoldering areas.
Firefighting efforts are complemented by strict air traffic measures. Temporary Flight Restrictions are in effect to maintain safety for aerial firefighting operations. Residents are urged to stay updated on evacuation notices through respective county websites.
Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency on March 26 to support response efforts. A statewide ban on open burning was issued starting March 21, with all permits canceled and no new ones issued until further notice.
