WakeMed has joined North Carolina’s Children and Families Specialty Plan (CFSP), a Medicaid Managed Care initiative aimed at providing integrated health care for children, youth, and young adults who are currently or were previously served by child welfare services. The CFSP is managed statewide by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina under the name Healthy Blue Care Together.

Healthy Blue Care Together operates in all 100 counties of North Carolina. The plan is designed to ensure that approximately 32,000 children, youth, and young adults in the child welfare system can access both medical and behavioral health services even if their placements change across the state. According to organizers, “Healthy Blue Care Together is part of North Carolina’s commitment to improving the long-term health and well-being of children experiencing child welfare services and to strengthen and support families.”

WakeMed joins seven other major hospital systems in this effort: Advocate Health, Cape Fear Valley Health, Cone Health, Duke Health, ECU Health, HCA Healthcare, and Novant Health. These hospitals have contracted with Healthy Blue Care Together to provide covered services as part of the network.

Founded in Raleigh in 1961, WakeMed serves as a key health care provider in the region. It operates three full-service hospitals along with a mental health facility, eight emergency departments—including specialized trauma centers—and a dedicated Children’s Hospital. WakeMed also features outpatient facilities known as healthplexes and maintains a broad network of physician practices covering various specialties across its campuses. The organization represents the largest health system in Wake County.

The hospital system is recognized nationally for maternity care and provides an array of services including emergency care, heart treatment, orthopedics, cancer care, women’s health services, advanced joint replacement procedures and more. Donald Gintzig serves as president and CEO of WakeMed under the oversight of a volunteer Board of Directors.

WakeMed emphasizes enhancing community well-being through exceptional care for all patients. More information about its programs can be found on its official website. Details about Healthy Blue Care Together are available on their own site.
