A coalition of voting rights groups has initiated a public service campaign urging Jefferson Griffin to cease his efforts to discard the ballots of 60,000 North Carolinians. Griffin, who lost his bid for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court, is accused of attempting to overturn the 2024 election results without evidence.
Justice Allison Riggs was confirmed as the winner after multiple recounts and audits. Despite this, Griffin continues to challenge the outcome, particularly targeting young and Black voters at higher rates. He has appealed to the Republican-majority NC Supreme Court to assist in dismissing votes.
Terri B., a voter from Granville County whose ballot is being challenged, expressed frustration: “Throwing out my ballot would mean what I say doesn’t matter.” Terri has been voting since registering in 2004.
The coalition’s campaign aims to inform North Carolinians about Griffin’s actions through billboards and digital media. Gino Nuzzolillo from Common Cause North Carolina stated, “The votes have been counted, and counted again… Now, Jefferson Griffin should honor the will of the voters.”
Dawn Blagrove from Emancipate Votes condemned Griffin’s refusal to accept election results as “reprehensible,” emphasizing that any attempt to alter them undermines democracy. Katelin Kaiser from Democracy North Carolina described Griffin’s actions as a “baseless attack on eligible voters.”
Common Cause NC focuses on promoting accountable governance and equal representation. Emancipate Votes works towards ending mass incarceration and structural racism in North Carolina. Democracy North Carolina strengthens democratic structures and advocates for disenfranchised communities.
