UNC Charlotte reported on May 6 a series of athletic and academic accomplishments by its student-athletes during the spring season. The university highlighted notable performances in golf, tennis, track and field, lacrosse, and softball.

The achievements are significant as they reflect both competitive success and academic excellence among student-athletes. These recognitions also come after a year marked by new leadership in key sports programs and facility expansions.

During the annual Normies awards ceremony held on April 30 at the Popp Martin Student Union, several individuals were honored for their contributions. Justin Matthews was named Male Athlete of the Year while Pinky Chaisilprungruang received Female Athlete of the Year honors. Zak Freeland earned Play of the Year for running the first sub-4:00 mile in school history. The women’s track and field team won Team Moment of the Year for back-to-back conference titles last May. Graham Gutknecht received the Provost Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award, Bronson Long was given the Hugh McEniry Award, and Sarah Pullium received both high academic recognition and set new records in discus and hammer throw events.

In men’s golf, Charlotte secured its second consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship under head coach Ryan Cabbage, who said: “We pride ourselves on building a championship culture. The names and the faces may change but the people don’t. They have carried on with the winning tradition.” Five players were named to this year’s All-Conference Team—a feat not achieved since 2006.

Women’s tennis concluded a historic season with a program-best ITA ranking (No. 30) after a strong regular-season finish but narrowly missed out on their first conference title before earning their first NCAA Tournament win against Elon University. Junior Sara Suchankova and sophomore Ni Xi were recognized with American All-Conference honors after climbing to No. 16 nationally in doubles rankings.

Other highlights include Pinky Chaisilprungruang being named Women’s Golfer of the Year for her second consecutive time; Isa Torres and Sophia Rakis from lacrosse making all-conference teams; multiple softball players earning postseason honors; Moritz Muenster being named Co-Freshman of the Year in men’s tennis; as well as continued record-breaking performances by Sarah Pullium in track events.
