U.S. Representative Greg Murphy of North Carolina’s 3rd District has highlighted the potential benefits of reforming the tax code to support small businesses in the alcoholic beverage industry. This sector, according to Murphy, sustains millions of jobs and generates significant tax revenue. His statement was made on the social media platform X.

“In the U.S. alone, the alcoholic beverage industry sustains over 4 million jobs,” said Murphy. “Generates almost $70 billion in annual tax revenue. Great speaking with NC Beer & Wine. Our tax code can help Main Street businesses and the local economies they support thrive.”

In 2024, Murphy organized a tax policy roundtable in North Carolina to address concerns about the possible expiration of Section 199A of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This section provides tax relief to pass-through entities such as breweries and beverage distributors. According to Murphy’s official House website, local business leaders attended the event to stress the importance of maintaining federal tax provisions that bolster small businesses and regional economic growth, especially within the alcoholic beverage industry.

The Brewers Association reports that in 2023, the U.S. craft brewing industry contributed $77.1 billion to the national economy and supported nearly 460,000 jobs. This contribution includes economic activities from brewing, distribution, and retail sales, alongside substantial federal, state, and local tax revenues.

Spectrum News indicates that North Carolina’s beer industry supports over 75,000 jobs and contributes more than $12.8 billion annually to the state’s economy. The industry also generates $1.8 billion in tax revenue and pays over $3.8 billion in wages, highlighting its significant role in driving economic development and public revenue within North Carolina.

Murphy has served as a Republican representative for North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District since 2019. He is a member of several committees including House Ways and Means, Veterans’ Affairs, and House Administration Committees. His official biography notes his focus on tax reform, healthcare policy, and support for small businesses—issues aligned with both his medical background and his district’s economic interests.
