Federal prosecutors and staff from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina will participate in National Night Out events on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The office will join community organizers, local neighborhoods, and law enforcement partners across the district.
National Night Out is a yearly event aimed at strengthening relationships between law enforcement and communities to improve neighborhood safety. Each year, millions of people in thousands of communities nationwide take part in activities on the first Tuesday of August.
This year, representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s Office will attend gatherings in Charlotte organized by the West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition and the Hidden Valley Community Association. They will also be present at Stumpton Park in Matthews and in Asheville’s Kenilworth Forest neighborhood to engage with residents, answer questions, and provide information about federal public safety efforts.
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson stated: “Our communities are safer when law enforcement and neighborhoods work together to prevent and address crime. That’s the point of National Night Out, and we are proud to join our law enforcement partners and communities across the district on this special night.”
National Night Out began in 1984 with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance under the U.S. Department of Justice. It is managed by the National Association of Town Watch, a non-profit organization that oversees participation across the country (https://natw.org/).
The event is coordinated locally by police departments and trained volunteers who organize block parties, cookouts, festivals, parades, safety demonstrations, seminars for youth, visits from emergency personnel, among other activities. These efforts aim to unite neighbors in promoting safety within their communities.
