Christopher Murrita Diaz, 20, and Gustavo Vergara Avalos, 21, both from Monroe, North Carolina, were sentenced to over ten years in prison for drug and gun-related charges. Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced the sentencing. Both men admitted to conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of a machinegun. Diaz also pleaded guilty to additional charges related to distribution of cocaine and firearms offenses.

The announcement was made alongside Alicia Jones from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Charlotte Field Division, and Sheriff Eddie Cathey of the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

According to court records, an investigation into Diaz revealed he was selling cocaine and machinegun conversion devices known as “Glock switches.” During this investigation conducted by law enforcement agencies including the ATF, Diaz sold drugs and firearms to a confidential informant. Some sales occurred at Vergara Avalos’ home. In October 2023, authorities searched the residence and confiscated multiple firearms and illegal items.

Both defendants remain in custody pending transfer to a federal prison facility.

The case was investigated by the ATF and Union County Sheriff’s Office with prosecution managed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte.
