NC State wrestling secured a narrow 19-17 win over Virginia on Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum, with heavyweight Isaac Trumble delivering a pin in the final bout to clinch the victory.

The Wolfpack, ranked ninth nationally, began their 2026 conference schedule seeking a twelfth consecutive win against the Cavaliers. The team faced early setbacks, missing top-ranked Vincent Robinson at 125 pounds and losing the first three matches. Koy Buesgens, ranked fifth at 149 pounds, earned NC State’s first points, bringing the score to 3-10.

Virginia extended its lead when Colton Washleski achieved a major decision over Brogan Tucker at 157 pounds, putting the Cavaliers ahead 14-3 at halftime. After intermission, NC State responded with wins from Will Denny (165 lbs), Matty Singleton (174 lbs), and Don Cates (184 lbs), narrowing Virginia’s lead to 14-13.

At 197 pounds, Patrick Brophy of NC State was defeated by Steven Burrell Jr., which gave Virginia a four-point advantage heading into the final match. In that decisive bout, second-ranked Isaac Trumble pinned Brenan Morgan in the second period to secure both his fifth bonus point win of the season and the overall victory for NC State.

The dual meet drew an attendance of 2,116 fans at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.

NC State will next travel to face No. 24 Stanford on Friday before competing against CSU Bakersfield in a neutral-site dual on Sunday.
