Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) issued a statement addressing the ongoing government shutdown, criticizing Democratic leadership for prolonging the situation. Tillis argued that negotiations are not possible when one side is using the federal government as leverage.

“It is impossible to negotiate in good faith when one side holds the entire federal government hostage, and political extortion cannot be the new precedent. Senator Schumer has boxed himself in, and Democrats are finally realizing their decisions have real consequences on real Americans. Their attempts to push for show votes that alleviate the pain for only some groups of Americans are a complete abdication of responsibility. Thirty days of shutting down the entire government is long enough. We only need five Democratic Senators to stop talking about being bipartisan and start acting bipartisan by voting to end this ridiculous shutdown,” said Tillis.

Tillis has been serving as a U.S. Senator from North Carolina since 2015. He secured his seat in 2014 after defeating Kay Hagan with 48.8% of the vote compared to Hagan’s 47.3%. In his 2020 re-election campaign, he won against Cal Cunningham with 48.7% of the vote while Cunningham received 46.9%.
