Teen charged with murder after family dispute in Charlotte

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has announced the arrest of 19-year-old Christian Caraballo, who is charged with the murder of his uncle during a family dispute in east Charlotte.

According to the police department, officers responded to a call around 2 a.m. on October 18 at a residence on Wembley Drive in the Commonwealth Park area. Upon arrival, they discovered Ernesto Caraballo Toledo deceased in the backyard, showing signs of blunt force trauma and strangulation. The scene revealed evidence of a violent altercation, including broken furniture, overturned chairs, and blood throughout the house. Following an investigation into the incident, Christian Caraballo was taken into custody.

Mecklenburg County arrest records indicate that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer was filed against Caraballo on December 2, suggesting he is not legally present in the United States. The warrant and autopsy findings confirmed both strangulation and blunt force trauma as causes of death.

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data highlights that North Carolina’s homicide rate in 2023 stood at 8.5 per 100,000 residents, surpassing the national average of 6.1. Charlotte reported over 110 homicides in 2023, marking a 7% increase from the previous year and emphasizing ongoing challenges with violent domestic incidents.
