WakeMed has announced the implementation of seasonal visitation restrictions at its hospitals in response to the annual arrival of respiratory viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). These measures aim to protect vulnerable patients such as premature infants, newborns, young children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems from severe illness or potential death caused by RSV.
Starting December 16, access to areas where babies and children receive care is restricted to individuals aged 12 and older. The affected areas include WakeMed Children’s Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Units, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Labor, Delivery & Postpartum Care Units, OB Emergency Departments, Newborn Nurseries, and Special Care Nursery.
"While we truly understand that visitation restrictions can be difficult for families," a spokesperson stated, "WakeMed is committed to ensuring our patients are safe while they are in our care. Restricting visitation is best clinical practice."
Additionally, WakeMed advises that anyone exhibiting symptoms of any acute contagious illness should refrain from visiting their facilities out of respect for patient safety.
