On March 13, 2024, it was reported that Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx has taken a firm stance in seeking information regarding a closed-door summit involving key representatives from federal labor agencies and organized labor leaders.
In a series of letters addressed to Department of Labor (DOL) Acting Secretary Julie Su, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Chair Charlotte Burrows, and National Relations Board (NLRB) General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo, Foxx expressed her concerns and demands for transparency.
Foxx criticized Su for failing to comply with the Committee's requests, stating, "Your failure to comply with the subpoena and the Committee’s previous requests is utterly beyond comprehension." She highlighted the closed-door nature of the summit, suggesting that federal labor agencies were setting policies that favored organized labor without considering other stakeholders. Foxx also questioned the lack of public disclosures regarding communications following the summit.
Regarding EEOC's involvement, Foxx requested a copy of Chair Burrows' remarks and an explanation of the agency's participation in the summit. She emphasized that the summit went beyond being a worker-oriented event and involved influential labor agencies within the Biden administration.
In the case of the NLRB, Foxx sought clarification from General Counsel Abruzzo on how the agency's participation in the summit influenced subsequent policy decisions. She highlighted the closed-door aspect of the event and stressed the need for transparency regarding the NLRB's role.
Foxx's letters reflect a deep concern for the transparency and decision-making processes surrounding the summit, signaling a commitment to conducting thorough oversight of federal labor agencies' interactions with organized labor.
