WASHINGTON – Today, Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) expressed strong criticism towards AmeriCorps in light of a recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) which highlighted significant issues within the agency.
"AmeriCorps’ legacy of incompetence and total disregard for taxpayer money has taken center stage in GAO’s newest report," stated Foxx. She pointed out that AmeriCorps has failed to effectively address rampant deficiencies and fraud within the organization. Foxx emphasized that AmeriCorps had not implemented the necessary anti-fraud framework guidelines recommended by the GAO, leading to continued instances of financial mismanagement.
Foxx highlighted the magnitude of taxpayer funds allocated to AmeriCorps, stating, "AmeriCorps receives an astounding $1 billion in taxpayer funds every year but hasn’t received a clean audit for the past 7 years." She expressed concern over the agency's inability to reform itself despite ongoing issues with fraud and mismanagement.
In conclusion, Foxx firmly stated, "The agency has proven time and time again incapable of reforming itself and should never be given another opportunity to abuse taxpayer dollars."
