A recent survey conducted by the League of American Workers (LAW) reveals that 76 percent of North Carolina voters consider it "unfair" for biological males to participate in female sports at high schools and colleges. This view is shared by 53 percent of self-identified Democrats and 82 percent of independents.

The Fairness in Women's Sports Act, HB 574/SB 631, was passed in both the State House and Senate in June 2023. However, Democratic Governor Roy Cooper vetoed it, expressing his belief that the bill was "inflaming [the] political culture wars by making broad, uninformed decisions about an extremely small number of vulnerable children…"

According to Fox News, Despite Cooper’s veto, the General Assembly overrode it, thereby enacting the Fairness in Women's Sports Act into law. The legislation prohibits transgender girls and women from competing in women's sports at middle school, high school, and college levels.

Cooper’s stance on boys participating in girls’ sports aligns closely with President Joe Biden’s views. According to The Hill, Biden pledged last year to veto H.R. 734, also known as the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. This bill sought to amend Title IX to establish that sex is "based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth."

A poll conducted by North Star Opinion Research and published by LAW, an organization whose mission is to conduct research and develop proposals for public policies impacting American workers and the economy, indicates that there is significant dissatisfaction among North Carolina voters about the country's direction, according to a post by the League of American Workers. 

By a margin of 75 percent to 18 percent, respondents expressed their belief that "the country is off on the wrong track." This sentiment was echoed by 80 percent of independent voters.

ESPN reports that currently there are laws limiting biological males from competing in female sports in 23 states.
