North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) said he was “proud” of the state legislature for overriding Gov. Roy Cooper’s (D-N.C.) veto of S.B. 20, “The Care for Women, Children, and Families Act.”

“I am proud that the House has overriden the Governor’s veto of this meaningful, mainstream legislation,” tweeted Moore. “Senate Bill 20 will save lives and provide needed support for women and families while putting North Carolina’s abortion law in line with themes of the rest of the free world.”

SBA Pro-Life America (SBA) said in a statement that the bill “protects life eight weeks sooner than the previous state law” and “places guardrails around dangerous abortion pills and increases support for mothers and families by allocating $160 million for childcare, parental leave, community college assistance.”

“The battleground state of North Carolina has taken a major step forward in the fight for life,” said SBA President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “By defying Gov. Cooper’s bully tactics and standing for the will of the people, the General Assembly modeled great courage on the issue of life.

Dannenfelser said that “elected officials and candidates across this country should take note how pro-life leaders stood up to the extreme abortion agenda of the Democrats to protect life and serve mothers.”

Cooper criticized legislators for overriding his veto.

“I will continue doing everything I can to protect abortion access in North Carolina,” tweeted Cooper

Cooper vetoed the bill on May 14. The House overrode the veto yesterday on a vote of 72-48. The Senate voted 30-20 to override the veto.

“We thank legislators for making this a historic day in North Carolina.,” said Dannenfelser. “We are grateful to SBA National Pro-Life Women’s Caucus member Sen. Krawiec, Speaker Moore, Senate Leader Berger and every legislator who voted to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s heartless veto.”
