City of Belmont issued the following announcement on Sep 24.
“Leave the leaves” this autumn. Support local butterfly, bee, firefly, and songbird populations by simply leaving fallen leaves on the ground. Many types of pollinators, insects, and wildlife rely on these leaves for food, shelter, and nest material to get through the winter. For more information on leaving the leaves, visit https://www.nwf.org/.../2019/09-25-19-Leave-the-Leaves.
If you must remove leaves, consider putting them to work through composting. Autumn leaves are “compost gold” and can help kickstart or refuel backyard composting. For more information on composting leaves, visit https://deq.nc.gov/.../composting-101/composting-basics.
