City of Charlotte issued the following announcement on Sep 24.
The City of Charlotte on Friday unveiled and installed the new Druid Hills Way street signs, marking the first street renaming to take place as part of the city’s Legacy Commission work.
Druid Hills Way replaces Jefferson Davis Street and is the first of nine streets to be renamed following the Charlotte City Council’s February 2021 approval to adopt Legacy Commission recommendations to rename streets named after leaders of the Confederacy and white supremacists.
Residents and property owners overwhelmingly selected Druid Hills Way as the first choice for their new street name with 55% of the respondents, compared to 9% for the next highest choice.
“I am delighted that the residents of Druid Hills now have a street name that uplifts the neighborhood and will serve as a point of pride,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles. “The Legacy Commission set out to empower and embolden Charlotteans through the removal of insensitive historical markers and this is just the beginning of more great work to come.”
Next Steps
An unveiling of the updated street name signs for Montford Point Street, replacing Phifer Avenue, is scheduled for Oct. 28.
Replacement name voting for Aycock Lane, Jackson Avenue and Zebulon Avenue will take place Oct. 4 through Oct. 25 and effective dates for the new street names are anticipated on Jan. 21, 2022.
Community engagement for Hill Street and Morrison Boulevard will begin in late October.
