Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) has been censured by the North Carolina GOP for voting to convict former President Donald Trump during the impeachment trial.
NC GOP Chairperson Michael Whatley expressed shock over Burr’s vote and what Whatley considers Burr's failure to defend the Constitution.
“North Carolina Republicans sent Sen. Burr to the United States Senate to uphold the Constitution and his vote today to convict in a trial that he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” Whatley said in a statement, according to the Epoch Times.
Burr has however blamed the former president for inciting violence, saying Trump “directed his supporters to go to the Capitol to disrupt the lawful proceedings required by the Constitution” on Jan. 6, adding: “When the crowd became violent, the President used his office to first inflame the situation instead of immediately calling for an end to the assault.” The Epoch Times reports.
On Saturday, seven Republican senators sided with Democrats in voting to convict Trump. Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) are yet to receive a backlash from their party, while Bill Cassidy and Pat Toomey have already been censured.
