A recent poll by the Civitas Institute found that North Carolina citizens were less likely to vote for candidates who opposed the Opportunity Scholarship Program (OCP).
The program offers a voucher to students from moderate to low-income families with government-funded payments for up to $4,200. These vouchers can be used toward a private education at the school of their choice.
In a statewide survey, the Civitas Institute reported that 69% of respondents supported the school choice program, while 18% opposed it, as reported by the Locker Room. When asked if they would be more or less likely to vote for a candidate who opposes OCP, 52% of respondents indicated their vote would be influenced against candidates if they opposed the program while the same 18% returned more likely.
Opponents of this program include Gov. Roy Cooper and Superintendent of Public Instruction candidate Jen Mangrum, both Democrats, as reported by the Locker Room. The N.C. Association of Educators has endorsed many candidates who have also stated their wish to do away with OCP.
