Winston-Salem City issued the following announcement on Nov. 13
A local historic marker commemorating the Phi Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will be unveiled at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, on the south side of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Carl Russell and Highland avenues.
The Phi Omega chapter was established in 1924 and was the first graduate chapter in North Carolina for AKA, which is the nation’s oldest African-American sorority. Over the years the chapter has been a prominent factor in local affairs, with several members elected to public office, and in the early 1990s the chapter built the Ivy Arms Apartments on East Second Street to address the lack of modern apartments in East Winston.
Speakers at the unveiling will include Mayor Allen Joines; Mayor Pro Tempore Vivian H. Burke; Council Member Annette Scippio; Irma Richardson, the president of the AKA Phi Omega chapter; and Cheryl Harry, of Triad Cultural Arts.
